Challenge Yourself to Come Alive

By Catherine Heatley March 15, 2019

Looking for a great way to kick of your Spring? Why not grab the kids, your partner, some friends or coworkers and start it off on the right foot! You may be familiar with the old Chinese proverb that 'a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,' and that's exactly what you'll do if you join the FREE 30 Mile, 30 Day Walking Challenge with Come Alive Outside.

Come Alive Outside is a non-profit organization dedicated to getting people off the couch and back outside! It is a sad reality that kids today spend only half the amount of time outside that children did 30 years ago, and the problem is only getting worse. Put those screens aside and commit to a Mile A Day, kicking off on Saturday, March 16th and running through April 14th. Registration and participation in the program is FREE, and you must register at comealiveoutside.com/mile-a-day. You can also pick up a paper form at the Rutland Free Library and mail it in.

For a fun way to kick of your personal Challenge, consider participating in the Shiver Me Shamrocks 5K Fun Run/Walk in Rutland Vermont this Saturday! Not only will you log those first few miles on your way to your 30-mile goal, you'll have a fun and fabulous community of participants to start things off. Looking for ideas for logging your miles after the event? Walk around a local outdoor track, soccer or baseball field. Find a favorite trail or walking path. Or pick out a walk-able route through your own neighborhood. Take your dog, the kids, or get a friend to commit with you to help keep you on track even on the days you just don't want to. If you're not sure how far 1 mile is, there are many free apps to choose from for both Android and iOS that can help you measure your time and distance. One of my favorites is 'Map My Walk' by UnderArmor. Best of luck!
